FATHER DECEASED...IS MOTHER LIABLE ON CO-SIGNED LOAN?

My father cosigned an auto loan in 7/2000. The person he cosigned for is not current on payments and the loan is ready to go into default.
My father died in 10/2001, and his estate is closed. Is my mother responsible for this debt if the loan defaults? She didn't cosign, only he did. The state the loan originated in is Wisconsin, and the party currently lives and keeps the car in Texas. Someone PLEASE help!!!!!!
