Gulfstate is sleazy scummy - the worst. Start a paper trail in preparation for suing them (actually, just serving them, they fold once you have them served, but be able to back it up).

Send validation letter, when they don't validate, send a "you didn't prove it, so now you better remove it" letter. When they don't remove it, sue them for violations of FCRA, FDCPA, and defamation of credit. Your paper trail is your proof.

Don't sign any letters to them - they are so bad they might forge your signature.

You can make them go away, but it takes patience and persistence, and you had better be willing to go to court. I doubt you will have to, but you can't threaten to do something unless you are prepared to do it.
