Might be a longshot, but you might check with the laws of your particular state. Some states (like here in Arkansas) it is illegal for a CA to settle a debt for an amount and then to sell, assign or give the remaining amount to another CA for collection. (Of course, this doesn't mean that they DON'T do it, it just gives you another tool to use in your battle!) Somewhere during my countless hours of research I have seen a list of states with laws like this--however I can't remember where the heck it was?!
