alternatives to settlement?

we have just refinanced our home in order to pay off our credit cards. Our total cc debt is around $25,000. We called the companies and offered to pay the amounts in full if they would just knock a little intrest off. They said the only way for us to get anything taken off of the total amount owed was to settle. We have been late several times but are current for now. Does anyone know if there's any other way to get this debt reduced any w/out setteling? I mean we are offering to pay the debt. You'd think they'd work with ya a little bit.
