Looking for info on bankrupcy.

I am concidering filing for bankrupcy but I don't know that much about it. All said (wihtout my car loan) I am about $12,000 in credit card debt. Over a year ago I consolidated these cards hoping to drop the balances and work tward paying them off. However, the balances on these cards are not going down at all, maybe $20 per month. Any advise?
