You need to get a lawyer to file an answer and request dismissal of this action. If you "signed" financial responsibility when you were not legally obliged to do so,it should be fairly simple to get it dismissed. When you see a lawyer, tell him you wish to file a countersuit for violations of the FDCPA. You were never properly notified of your rights.
How old was your son at the time?
What kind of "deductible" or co-insurance amount could possibly leave you obligated for $7,000.? Any kind of group insurance would have a maximum yearly well under $7,000. whose insurance was it, yours or your wife's? You are being needlessly aggrevated by the collection agency, get a lawyer,he/she will make a bundle on your countersuit.
