Be very careful dealing with Sears--been there, still trying to clean up the mess. Above all else, GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING FROM THEM. The atty/collector I dealt with apparently never filed judgment anywhere, although he sent me legal documents that appeared to bear the signatures of local court officials. Young, stupid and embarrassed, I threw them away after settling. The CA reported the debt paid in full, and claims they were operating according to the wishes of Sears in settling my account. I paid 50% of an original debt of $700, plus $250 in legal fees ($475 payment). End of story, or so I thought. Turns out, 2 years later, Sears simply deducted my $475 from the original amount and now report that I have a past due amount of $225 and they don't intend to do anything about it! UUUUGGGGGHHH! The CA/atty has actually been helpful to me--they no longer handle Sears collections, because, as he says "Sears is notorious for innacurately reporting settlemant accounts......" They make me want to pull (the rest of) my hair out!! :-)
