Can I validate this or go right to negotiation?

I have a credit card which didn't get paid off when I paid off all my others about 5 years ago. I received no credit card bills or collection agency bills, didn't realize I hadn't paid it, until it showed up on a credit check last month. About $500.00 is still owed and I'd like to pay it off. But can I use validation to possibly get this resolved in my favor if it never went to a collection agency? I would like to validate it, because for five years I was sure I'd paid it, but if I didn't, I would like to settle. Any thoughts? I'm brand new to this. Thanks!
