Yes, if it is not a cashier's check they can hold it. Make sure it has cleared, and then call the bank manager, just like Razor said.

My bank did that to me with one of my checks for a balance transfer - I wanted to run it through my checking account for documentation, shazzam!! They got me!! Kept it 15 days. Finally i went in to close the account, I was so mad. They released it.

I am slowlt transferring everything over to my credit union account. I think 10 days of that was just to use the float.
