Associates CC bounced from collection agency to collection agency

I had an account sent to an agency a while back and sent a cease and decist letter. Then they must have sent it to another agency. The women threatened me and I said well I don't have the money and she she says ok and hangs up on me. I never heard anymore from them. Recently I received a letter from a third company offering me a settlement. What should I do? What can I expect as far as my credit history? I read that there's no sense in paying it because my credit history will still say delinquent.
