My parents received a call from a CA for a telephone bill that I have been past due on since 4/96. My mother(bless her heart) was wise enough not to give the people my number, but she took a message and passed it on to me. Though the CA did not tell her what they were trying to collect money for, they did tell her that they were a CA seeking to collect a debt from me. I called the CA back to see what it was about and they told me that is was for phone bill(Ameritech) from 4/96, and that I had until 5/22/02 to pay in full or they would garnish my wages. They proceeded to ask where I worked and said that they would call my employer to verify employment and my salary. They told me I had no rights, and it would be best for me to get a lawyer and file for backruptcy if I did not pay. I suggested to them that they were using illegitimate threats of heavy handed tactics to try and scare me into paying. When asking the CA how they could just contact my employer and get personal information they told me that they could and would. As I pressed them for specific laws enabling them to do this they would contradict themselves and change their intended courses of action. I know this is long, but if anybody reads this I would like to hear you thoughts.

One last thing... this debt was originally reported on my CR in 4/96. The SOL in Michigan where the debt occured is 6 years. Do I have an absolute defense in court if they they to sue me after 4/02? Does anybody have any thoughts on the chances of Ameritech taking me to court for a 6 year old $1000 phone bill?
