Gulf State was recently either taken over by Ford or purchased by Ford. If they are collecting on a debt that cannot be verified, they at least have someone overlooking them that insists they follow Federal Law.

Your right is left to dispute the debt if it is actually being reported to a credit reporting agency. Contact Gulfstate and ask them who they are reporting to? Then find out from that credit reporting agency whether or not they show this debt on your credit bureau.

If it is not showing on your credit bureau, I would just send Gulf State a Cease and Desist ALL COMMUNICATION letter via Certified Return Receipt Mail and make the whole thing just go away.
If it IS reporting to a credit reporting agency, I would dispute the debt in writing and also send it via Certified Return receipt mail directly to the credit reporting agency. (i.e. - Equifax, etc.)

The person that said to make a "paper trail" was exactly correct. Always "document" your paper trail by mailing CERTIFIED RETURN RECEIPT and keep good files of your documenation.
