Providian Account Purchased by Sherman

I've been trying to piece together an answer to my question based on posts from others, but I've thoroughly confused myself and don't know what to do. Recently obtained credit report. I'm in NC. Providian Bancorp account charged off in 3/01. Sherman purchased account in 3/01. Tried to work with Providian but they said they no longer had account and that it was purchased by Sherman so no arrangements could be made with them. Sherman guy total butt and I won't talk to him on the phone anymore. I'd like to pay the debt (approx. $4400). I can't pay all at once and can afford about $100 a month. What letter do I write to Sherman to make a payment arrangement and get butt to quit calling me?
