Want to Pay Off Balance of CC's. How Should I Proceed?

Just found this forum and have found some great info. I have a question and need some help. We have a couple cc's we would like to pay off (current balances of approx. $3376 and $1690). We have the money right now to pay these amounts. Both are overdue with substantial late fees, etc. they like to tack on which accounts for most of the charges owed on these cc's. I wanted to write the cc companies and ask what they would take to pay these off, but that doesn't sound like such a good idea now. What is the best way to get these paid off and out of our hair? Once they are paid off, we will be closing the accounts. I'm at a loss and totally ignorant on how to handle this. I thought it would be just a matter of writing a check for the balance and calling it over, but if I could find a way to reduce the amount owed (since most of it is late charges and over limit fees that were caused by the late charges to begin with) and not have to pay the full amount that would be even better.

Any advice?
