Treble damages???

I live in Caifornia, i had a rtd check from Blockbuster, which was forwarded to a CA called JBA Services, Inc., they just sent me a notice saying that will be seeking "treble damages", the notice says the check was written 7/01/01 for $40.11 and they want me to pay $160.44 and unless i pay within 10 days they will report me to TU. What can i do???
