In N.Y. a judgment stays active for 20 years.It means that if you stay in N.Y. and want to buy property or anything major, it would risk a lien and seizure. It means a possible garnishment of your salary. Of course, if you are a student going back to some other State,it probably wouldn't hurt too much, or if you are a senior living in a rental property, not working, it won't matter. Anything else, get a lawyer to negotiate a settlement.
