In Cal. the legal LIMITS for collecting on a bad check are a penalty of 3X the amount of the check, with a minimum penalty of $100. and a maximum of $1,500.(over $500. bad check becomes a criminal action)This keeps the companies that guarantee checks for mechants able to be in a profitable business, and keeps merchants from having to absorb bad check losses. Of course if you were in some other State's jurisdiction,with lower limits for criminal prosocution you could be in jail.
