A collection agency may put an inquiry on your credit file as long as the debt is valid and assigned to/bought by them regardless of the length of time involved. They must, however, inquire as a creditor. These types of inquiries may not be released to 3rd parties. Only inquiries which you have authorized (i.e. applying for credit or a car loan, etc.) may be reported to 3rd parties.
