ISP accounts that weren't canceled at my request...

When I got my new pc back '98 I signed up for a local ISP. I used the
service for a little while and then changed to another ISP.

Keep in mind though that this was one of those deals where I pick up
the software disc from the store front for this ISP (they sell other
services too like cellular, home phone service, etc.) and they have
absolutely no idea what my SSN is. I've never given it to them and
they've never asked for it.

Since they chose to ignore emails (about 6 or 7) sent several months
apart and never canceled the account how likely is it to affect my
credit report?
They've sent the account to a local collection agency and the amount
is somewhere around $450. The agency told me to send a letter to them
contesting the debt owed based on what I mentioned above.

To say this is annoying is an understatement. Since they don't have
my SSN are they able to actually do anything? No checks sent to the
ISP when I was using it for monthly fees ever had my SSN on them.
