GMAC and vehicle finance.

I bought a new GMC (smartbuy) back in May 1999. The salesman told my wife that I didn't have good credit but GMAC financed me anyway due to my having always paid my previous GMAC account on time (and paid it off at end of contract). Is this common for automobile company owned finance companies? I went on Consumer credit counseling back in Dec of 99 with Ameridebt and supposedly they got my old credit card accounts reaged and current. Also back in Nov of 2001 I ran into a problem and Cap 1 put an HL9 on my report (they claimed they did; I've never actually seen it). I've since worked out an arrangement with them and am paying them montly. My SmartBuy account comes up for maturity in October of this year. I'll have an option to refinance and keep my existing vehicle or do another Smartbuy contract. The lady at GMAC said that refinancing another one shouldn't be a problem since my account is in excellent standing. Any info greatly appreciated.
