what constitutes being served?

What constitutes notification of a judgement hearing? I live in the city, in an apartment building and our mailboxes are outside, open to the street. The mailboxes for individual units are locked. Does leaving the summons on top of mailboxes meet the notification requirements? Is it required that someone sign for something?
