citibank charged-off account

I owe Citibank $8700.00 which if I had I would pay in a second. I take home $650.00/wk which I use to support my 2 year old and a 4 week old. My wife is stay at home until the kids are old enough for school. I am presently hiding behind a non pub tel # and I sent a cease communications letter to the only collection agency they sent after me. The debt was written off in May 2000... It was incurred in Massachusetts but I live out of state now...Bankruptcy is too expensive to file, plus, if there is a little likelihood they will sue, I'd rather just wait it out. Does this sound like a smart move? Even if they sue me, there's no chance I could ever pay it with my present salary and rent/car/insurance/utility/food/diapers, etc etc expenses...Should I just wait it out and file bankruptcy if and when they sue me?
