Question on CC Payments

I have a Discover card that I'm paying on, all on time and everything, but there are 2 balances. 1 is for purchases and the other is for cash advances. There was an emergency a while back and the money was needed. Obviously, the interest on the cash advance is higher. When I make a payment, they apply it to the purchases balance, which is a lower interest rate. In the meantime, the balance on the higher interest cash advance continues to rise. My question is, when I send them a payment, if I write on the payment coupon that the payment is to be applied to the cash advance, are they required to do so?
