I agree with Why Chat, it is not a good idea to leverage existing assets, and sign your name to this debt, when you haven't so far. Also, it is not common sense to take unsecured debt and secure it - ever. It's popular right now, but it's dangerous. No one has any guarantees for the future, why jeopardize something you own if you don't have to?

As far as what would happen to your wife if you confront this... depends. Most of the card companies do not bring charges against people in this situation, since then they stand the chance of YOU suing THEM. That is no guarantee that they won't, but generally speaking it just doesn't go that way. They did not have safeguards in place to prevent this fraudulent activity, and they don't want to deal with it.

I still think talking to your wife about this might lead to some amicable solution. Has she had problems? been sick? can't live on what she makes? or is she just taking advantage of you?
