I live in California. I had been laid off from a job in which I had a company Visa card assigned to me. I was laid off in December 2001 and they did not ask for the card back when I was terminated. In January 2002 I accidently charged a major appliance on this card (online) for the amount of $3,200. When the debt did not show on my "personal" credit card. I thought it was strange. About 2 months later I received a call from the company I had worked for saying that they noticed a big charge on the account the forgot to close and that they were going to report the card stolen and that I would be arrested. I don't have the available funds to pay them off now and they want the money. They were not a good company to work for and actually laid me off unfairly. So now I feel like NOT paying them and telling them to go take a hike. Can they really do anything to me? Am I LEGALLY responsible for the debt (I know morally I should pay it). What can they do and can they have me arrested? Any good sites with this type of info.? What are the laws in this case? Worried, please help!!! Thanks to anyone who takes the time to respond.
