Based on everyone's advice I decided to go with a lawyer rather than try to do Chpt 7 on my own. It went pretty well and I felt encouraged when I left. I just wanted to see if my experience sounds like a normal first consultation. It was only about 20 minutes. He asked me questions about how much debt, did I own or rent, am I married, filing jointly or not, if I wanted to keep my car, and a few others. That was about it. He seems very positive that I'd have no problem. He also said that he'd never lost a BK case and saw no reason that mine wouldn't go through. I asked how soon I should file and he said ASAP. I was concerned about a $2000 bonus I've got coming in July, and thought maybe I should wait until I got it and disposed of it before I filed. He said this was not necessary becuase they would just exempt that small an amount of case (doesn't seem so small to me). Is that true? His fees are very reasonable, $600 and the $200 filing fee. As soon as I can get him half the money, he'll start the filing. All in all he seemed like a nice guy. He surely made me feel like it wouldn't be as difficult as I thought. I just hope he's on the up and up. I've never dealt with an attorny before so I'm a bit nervous. Thanks
