I have a "head trick" for dealing with these kinds of situations - I get into a mode where it is not my problem, I am just helping someone else solve their problem. That way I maintain my objectivity, and I can think more clearly. One of the things folks will try to do to you is throw you off balance by hammering you with questions over and over real fast, so you can't think, or deliberately say things to get you emotional. If you can distance your self mentally they won't be able to do that, and you will pick up on stuff instantly, because you are thinking objectively srather than subjectively.
