How to handle lawyers

Cleaning up my credit report and was unable to determine what one entry was... I disputed with the CRA and it came back verified. I called the creditor listed and realized that it was an old account of mine, but it has been referred to a collection agency. When I called the collection agency a recording said that they were a debt collector, but the representative said they were a lawyers office.

I made arrangements to pay, but was wondering if I should have handled it differently? He wanted all sorts of personal information that I refused to give him: how do I support myself, do I rent or own, my phone number, etc. I sent the payment in a money order - return receipt - so I wouldn't have to give them info about my banking accounts.

With all the info I have learned on this board it still "rattled my feathers" a little to hear him threaten me with a judgement even though I was trying to make arrangements with him.

Did I handle it correctly and thoughts on how to handle them in the future (I made arrangements to pay in 4 installments)??
