An ombudsman works with the student borrower and lender - to what extent I'm not sure - tell them your situtatio and then follow-up with written correspondence (always). Since they gave you the deferment (even if it was a little late) based on your economic hardship they should not be reporting it as late. On the deferment form it should note the beginning and ending date of deferment. Use a copy of that document to challenge with Wells Fargo. I'd also tell them you will report them to the Inspector's Office of Federal Student Loans. That office can investigate your deferment (a paperwork hell if Wells Fargo is not abiding by Federal Student Loan regs.).
Unfortunately, we live in a time that we have to investigate, follow-up, and challenge inaccurate reporting, etc. We are doing the jobs (should be paid for it:)) that they should be doing.
