Associates/Citibank Chargeoff......need advice!

I had a chargeoff with Associates in 2000. It lists on my report as Citibank, so I assume that Citibank has taken over Associates??? Anyway, my report shows $1794 out of $500 charged off with $375 past due. This account isn't scheduled to come off until 2007. I have not been contacted by any collection agencies, but I have been trying to get my credit back on track. Has anyone had any luck with contacting the original creditor (Citibank) to see if they would negotiate anything so the account would not be charged off? I cannot pay the whole amount off, but I could make payments on it. I need some help...would this even be beneficial to me?
