Shannon, the best way to handle this is to contact the creditor and work out an agreement (in writing) to pay off the debt. Negotiate in the agreement - if possible, to remove the negative entry or to change to a positive status on your credit report(s) after the debt is paid in full. Remember to list all the CRA's in the agreement where the debt is listed.
