Received suspicious summons - any advice?

My girlfriend called me at my office today to tell me that I had received a summons in the mail. (I live in Brooklyn, NY)

What is weird is that it was not sent certified mail, nor was it "served" - it just came with the regular mail.

The envelope is postmarked 2 days ago, but the contents are dated April 22nd, 2002.

The first page says "Summons" on it, along with instructions telling me to contact the county clerk, along with the address for the clerk's office.

The second page says "Verified Complaint" on it, along with a list of the particulars regarding this debt.

It was my understanding that this is not the proper way to issue a summons, am I mistaken? Since the dated material inside the letter is over a month old, I have no way to contact the clerk within the 30 days specified.

The law offices that appear on the summons are "Mitchell N. Kay" which I have found, after some searching, to be notoriously bad.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to what to do next.... The debt is $3800 in principal, with $5000 in legal fees, penalties, and interest tacked on top of it.

I am getting laid off on the 14th of next month, so I am not terribly worried abotu wage garnishment, but I am worried about them trying to get my savings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
