student loans?

I defaulted on my student loan about four years ago when I stopped working (after a year or two of unemployment, I am now a stay at home mom) and couldn't make the payments. I was willing to keep paying something, but they were totally unwilling to work with me on reduced payments.

I am still at home with my kids, but we have a bit more money now and I was thinking of trying to get on a payment plan with whoever owns my loan (they sell these loans every few months, it seems.) Anyway, I am a little worried about opening up a can of worms - starting to get phone calls or harassing letters. If I call them and they want payments that are higher than I can make, will I have started something awful by having contacted them? Are there groups that can help people who would like to pay off their loans but are afraid to "wake a sleeping dog" so to speak? Any info would be great. Thanks!

Kim
