How Do I Dispute A Charge Off?

I have a charge off showing up on my credit file from an auto repossession in 1996 with a bank located in Florida. I have never been a customer with this bank in Florida or cosigner for anyone. But to be honest I did have a repossession back around 1999, but this was with a different bank. Is it possible that the bank who repo the auto sold my account to another bank? Anyway, I called the bank in Florida to dispute the validity of the charge-off on my credit file. The bank couldn't pull anything up with my social security number and account number that was posted on the credit file. What should be my next step? I'm trying to obtain a low-rate credit card with Credit Union and also would like to obtain a mortgage soon to buy a house. Right now this charge off is the only derogatory remark on my credit file. The rest of the information reported on my credit file is satisfactory and helps my FICO score. So please tell me what should I do about the charge off?

Thanks for any and all advice!

Have a great day!
