charge off notice

I have a charge off on my credit report it went 30 days late in 10/97,I paid this one back in 2000,but lost the letter that said it was paid in full.The credit card place sent me a letter today saying that they are unable to locate this credit card account in my name and they want me to send them info (my ss# and they want me to say its ok for them to get a copy of my credit report.)and they will investigate and see if they can get it removed from my credit file. I paid this but on my credit report it says paid/account charged off.Should I just leave it alone? Do I have any options here?
any input would be appreciated It said it went to charge off as of 9/98
