:Once a cease and desist order is sent to the third party does this stop any legal actions by the third party? I was unable to find substantiating verbage in the FDCPA. The debt in reference is one that I didn't know I had until 3 - 4 years after my ex-wife and I separated and divorced. When she represented it on the financial declarations, I thought it was an individual credit card debt and didn't pursue any course of action (that was around 1994 or 1995). Several agencies since have apparently bought and sold the account and have been calling for me to pay for about 6 or 7 years. Now an attorney has called.

It is my understanding that a third party collection agency must stop all communication as wellas remove derogatory items from my credit file when I send them legal notice to cease and desist communication. This allegedly is verbage contained in the Fair Debt Collection Act. Is this true? How does it work?
