Dear Credit Gurus,

Help! After applying for a student loan to go back to school (Babson College: MBA) I received a letter from MEFA (Mass. Educational Financing Authority) noting that they (MEFA) could not continue processing my application until I submitted proof that an outstanding debt with Gulfstate Credit had been paid in full.

I contacted Gulfstate by phone. They claimed that the debt was from 1996 an that the original collector was AT&T Broadband. I have no re-collection of this debt whatsoever. And this is the first time I have been notified that it even existed. (I told the Gulfstate rep this also)Do I have any recourse in this matter? Are their any SOL issues? Othe suggestions for a course of action... with MEFA... with Gulfstate?

Thanks very much,
-Mark
