original creditor out of business - what does that mean?

Hi. I have a collection agency debt reported on my credit report, which also shows the original creditor. I think the original creditor is out of business. Is there any way I can have this removed because of that? I don't know how to tell if the account was sold to the collection agency or not. thanks in advance for any help
