You can call to cancel , but I would not cancel if card has a balance. A lot of times cancellation results in an increased interest rate.
If your worried about using the card ask someone you trust to lock the card in a safety deposit box or you can freeze the card in a bowl of water.
You also have to make sure that you have enough revolving credit that by canceling this card your FICO score will not go down.
