Can't I just go around them and contact the original creditor and see if I can negotiate a settlement with them directly and tell the CA to go pound sand? If the account has not actually been sold, then I don't really have to deal with the CA do I? The account actually shows up on my credit report as listed with the original creditor and with the original loan amount, not the amount the CA is now claiming.
