Jim, its to bad your wife gave away that kind of information to the collection agency. After 6 years they would have settled for 20%.
Once they knew that you needed a mortgage (or anything you needed) you lost your bargaining power. She should have said that she wished to pay back due to a moral reason as she recently found god or something along those lines. But now the collection agency has the ball in their court again.
