CRA investigation

ok, had a rental property and moved out dec/99, cleared "everything"; earlier this year got my credit report and there was a neg. entry from a utility co. regarding that property. Did some research and the debt is dated 07/01 ( first delincuency). Explained this to the co.
but they refused to fix the problem because it must be done personally ( I live 2000 miles away). OK, so I went online and requested an investigation, which just came back "remains".
The debt is nothing $56.00, it's for sewer, which was about $27.00 a month. I havent't contact the collection agency afraid that they are just going to send me some printout and not fix the problem neither.
Any suggestions? Thank you.
