I had this happen with a card from Providian. And I had an outstanding record with them. I canceled my account over the phone, then double checked it online to make sure it was canceled. Luckily I was still in the 0 financing intro period, so I now have however long to pay off the 500 bucks at 0 financing. I wanted to close one of my Orchard Bank cards and just pay it off so I would not have to pay the yearly fee, but they said they would charge a 3 dollar monthly maitenence fee.

I would suggest calling them, if you haven't already and tell them you want to close your account, then send them a certified, registered receipt letter to verify. When you speak to the rep, get their name, Id number etc and record the time and date. Also, see if they can give you a transaction ID number for your request.

Hope this helps some,
Marcy
