The big mistake in this was ignoring this debt. The government WILL collect their money. It depends on the state, I'm not sure about your state, as to what can and can not be garnished. If there is already a garnishment on his wages, then the Fed. Gov't will be in line next. However, I think at this point, they may not even want to bother with garnishing wages. At some point in time, if you have not resolved this issue, when you file your Fed. Income Taxes, instead of getting a refund, more than likely you'll get a nice letter from the IRS saying they've turned over your refund to pay for student loans.
