1. Dispute the dates.

2. Try sending a "Goodwill" letter to Citibank. I don't have any letters like this in my briefcase, so if yours is good, maybe I could put it up there for others to use. :) Basically, say that you paid your debt, you have been good for years, now, would they please consider changing the account to unrated or or taking off the "closed by credit grantor" notation. Incidentally, if it's that old, it isn't the main cause of a low score.

3. Same as 2 - try a goodwill letter to the lender - "please remove the lates, I am a good customer, etc etc." Sell yourself.

Sometimes the reason your score goes down when you dispute is that an old account is deleted. Sounds strange but it shortens the average age of your accounts. If it's really old, it can be overcome by current good payment history.

Sometimes it is because you dispute, and the "updated" date changes, making the scoring software read it as a newer account - something that may or may not be intentional in the scoring. Who knows? They hate for people to try to "repair" their credit, so it may be to penalize folks who try. I would try anyway.

Low scores can be caused by other things than derogs. I know people with derogs who are in the 700's. What are the reason codes and explanations you get when you get your score?

Linda
