Request cancellation of the account as of the date you requested it by phone. Request a "hardship" arrangement to pay off the balances due,(give the balance on each account at the time you requested cancellation) Keep all your bills, receipts copies of letters, green cards.Once it is turned over to an outside collection agency and you receive your first letter from them, respond with a dispute of their claim, request for validation of all the amounts and a cease and desist.(RRR) IF they file suit you will be able to respond that you tried to settle and include copies of your letters,when you have a preliminary hearing you will be able to negotiate a mediated settlement if you have the $$ at that time, or, if it goes to judgment you are in a State that exempts your home,& cannot garnish head of household wages.If you are married, and the accounts are in your name alone, make sure your cars,bank accounts etc. are in either joint ownership(with your spouse as primary) or in your spouse's name alone.
