You are right. it can't be put on your credit report. Tell the collection agency not to contact you anymore. If it's a speeding or parking ticket from 8 years ago, forget it (even though 'others' may tell you to pay). Unless they issued a warrant for your unpaid ticket, which they obviously didn't, no cop pulling you over now will even know about it. After 8 years...just let it go.
