What state are you in? For example in FL if you cannot pay, tell them so, you'll have to go to credit cons.

But if you wrote a check and knew the money would not be there and stopped payment on it, depending on the state, you could be prosecuted for fraud and depending on the amount of the check, it may be a felony.

And you can be sure they will come after you.
