Statute of limitations on credit reporting

I have a medical debt, service date is 12/96 and my insurance company paid part of this debt in 4/01. I realize that the last date of activity reactivates the statute of limitations but I need to know how if an account that is past the statue of limitations can remain on my CBR and for how long? The account was sent to a collection agency & reported to a CBR in 4/01- Can this legally remain on my CBR until 4/07?
Please advise.
