If this was a third-party collection agency (i.e.
*not* from an original creditor), then they were
violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
by even telling your parents the reason for the
call.

Get a mailing address for the collection agency,
and send a letter addressed to the Collection Dept.
Manager, and/or to the name that they sign their
dunning letters with, and explain what was done,
and that you know your FDCPA rights. Below your
signature, put, "cc: Federal Trade Commission" in
order to get the collector's attention.

Unfortunately, any real punishment would involve
taking them to court, which tends to involve a lot
of extra time and energy.

Also be sure to check out our Credit Laws
section for the Collection Agency FAQ, along with
our *Credit Laws* section, for some material on
the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Good Luck.
